Out
of the blue, in early spring of 1980, Laurie Sagalyn of WWD called
me to ask me to bring my book into their office. I believe
someone at Hearst Publications has passed my name along to them.
Coincidently I'd been advised by a friend to start reading
WWD earlier that year, (to keep myself ahead of the fashion curve,)
but never thought of, or knew how to approach them for work.
They started hiring me for free-lance assignments almost immediately.
WWD,
Women's Wear Daily, the paper for the fashion industry,
and its slicker retail version, W, were both great training ground
for me. As the photographer you needed to decide how and where
you wanted to set up your shot and to shoot quickly, being certain
you got what you needed. Quickly as in 10 minutes, sometimes
20, if you were really lucky maybe 30. The
wonderful thing was, you usually met the designers personally, and
photographed their cloths well before most everyone else, including
even the major monthlies. WWD was, and still is, a major player
in the business of fashion; think the Wall Street Journal of the
fashion industry.

The
shot (on the left,) was shot in Central Park in August 1981.
I was told that it was the first time in a long while that designer
James Galanos, always a great designer, was featured in WWD.
Known for his couture level of quality, Galanos regained prominence
in the '80's as a favorite designer of Nancy Reagan.
The
shot (above right,) was Part of an advance story for W and WWD on
New York designer Oscar de la Renta. His dress, worn by Eva
Voorhees, was shot in Bryant Park, New York when it was still wild,
years before it had any fashion conotations.
