Esme
had been a friend for quite a few years already in New York, and
was the "It girl" who made short hair sexy and modern.
She was the only brunette of a quartet of fresh young natural cover
girls represented by John Casablanca's upstart agency, ELITE Model
Management, New York. The other girls were Kelly Emberg, Kim
Alexis and Nancy Donahue. These four girls had almost every
cover of the Conde Nast titles from 1979 through the early eighties.
Esme
and I
almost worked together in 1979, on my first job for GLAMOUR, (which
she told me that she agreed to do only as a favor to me).
This was flattering because she was "a MADEMOISELLE and VOGUE
model, they didn't usually cross over to Glamour, but after Glamour
confirmed her for me, they the GLAMOUR editors switched her to a
more important story than mine, and I was left with scrambling to
find a replacement. Ah, dealing with the politics of the business
as a 20 year old beginner was not easy. I never worked for
GLAMOUR again. It was devastating.
Esme
was always nice and upbeat. I think the most memorable photos
of Esme in that era, were done by Arthur Elgort. Elgort photographed
her so well, so many times over the years, especially for British
Vogue and American Vogue, and so did Avedon. They were all
inspiring to me. So finally we find ourselves in Paris in
1985, and Grazia allowed us the opportunity to work together.
It was great.
