Steve
Landis was instrumental in launching Clare Hoak's modeling career.
Initially shunned by the New York modeling establishment because
of her height, Steve spotted Clare at a dinner party during the
late summer of 1983 and thought she was stunning. Steve photographed
her several times shortly thereafter. Some of those photos
were seen by a London model agent, Beth Boldt, who expressed strong
interest in Clare. (Side note: Beth also started Naomi
Campbell's career in London). Steve put them together, and
Clare left for London a few days later. She did well in London,
and upon her return to New York the following summer, she was in
demand with all the top editorial photographers including Denis
Piel, Richard Avedon and Arthur Elgort. She began working
with them for publications such as American VOGUE and became one
of Revlon's "Most Beautiful Women." That campaign
photographed by Avedon was memorable.
