Wale with two bodyguards in black and white
"Wale and the Boys," New York 1995

Ben Gruenberg,  Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje and Tim Boyce.  (Left to right)

The male models chosen for this project were carefully selected by Steve Landis.  "I wanted to create a strong mood and the selection of the male models was crucial to the success of the project.  In general there are not as many top black male models in the business.  Wale, as he is known to his friends, had risen to the top of the field, and was and is a bright, charismatic personality.  I asked him if he would work with me on this story and was delighted that he agreed.

Artistic portrait photography and artistic fashion photography are terms that are thrown around a lot and are very subjective.  I'm not sure if these photos are fashion photographs, portrait photographs or just photographs.  I only care if a photo has impact, whether it is striking, or beautiful, the question for me personally is, does it draw you in?  The other observation that I like to make is, the best male models are generally good actors, or at least bring an actor's mentality, to the project.  Wale, Tim and Ben all did just that.

Wale, wearing a suit by fashion designer Donna Karan, is an actor who credits this shot with getting him his big break in Hollywood.  After sending this photo out to casting agents and studios, numerous big breaks in major film and television roles came his way.  Wale is brilliant, multi-talented and dimensional and was a successful male model before becoming an actor.
